Dal 3G al 4G senza passi intermedi: è la strategia di T-mobile, che ha dichiarato di voler passare direttamente a LTE senza investire in upgrade HSPA.

Chief technology officer Joachim Horn says that T-Mobile will not deploy high-speed packet access (HSPA) evolution (HSPA+) to get more out of its 3G mobile broadband network and will instead move straight on to LTE. “If I need to invest into more hardware, I think it’s better to start early [with LTE]. LTE is a more future-oriented technology” [via]

Detta così, può sembrare una condanna di HSDPA e HSUPA, già implementate in molti Paesi europei (HSDPA in Italia è già a 7,2 Mbps in alcuni spot, HSUPA si appresta a portare 1,8 Mbps). In realtà, il CTO di T-Mobile fa un’importante precisazione che cambia totalmente le precedenti parole:

“We’ll deploy HSPA as long as there is no hardware replacement necessary,” he said. “We’ll do every other efficiency increase that’s software-based.” That means T-Mobile plans to upgrade its 3G network only up to peak downlink speeds of 14.4 Mbit/s and skip HSPA Evolution altogether. After that, it wants LTE.

Ovvero, fino a quando con ‘semplici’ upgrade software sarà possibile fare upgrade e migliorare le prestazioni della rete, si farà. Quando ci sarà da cambiare l’hardware, allora si pesnerà a LTE. Mi pare sensato, e a voi?
